158. pure reason revolution – 2003 – 2011.

Friday, December 9th, 2011

So on Saturday 26th November, I saw Pure Reason Revolution for what will be the final time.

And of course, mandatory set-list:

ACT ONE:

Aeropause

Goshen’s Remains
Apprentice of the Universe
The Bright Ambassadors of Morning
Nimos & Tambos
Voices in Winter / In the Realms of the Devine
Bullitts Dominae

Arrival / The Intention Craft
He Tried to Show Them Magic! / Ambassadors Return

ACT TWO:

Blitzkreig (with elements of Disconnect)
Black Mourning
Les Malheurs
Valour

Deus Ex Machina
Last Man, Last Round

Fight Fire
AVO

ENCOURE:

In Aurélia
The Twyncyn / Trembling Willows.

So, that now means that I will never see Golden Clothes/Disco live *sob*, and I was surprised about a few of the songs making an appearance on the list (LM, LR), and some not making the cut (Apogee), but overall it was a great set. It was lovely to hear He Tried to Show Them Magic! live,

and in fairness, when you get a band that has very few mediocre songs, it was always going to be difficult to make a set list that everybody would be happy with.

I must admit, I wasn’t all that up for going to see them on the night, due to being at work since 8am (which meant a 6am wakeup call), however, I knew I’d regret it if I didn’t go, but when I got there, in the same spot I always stand when I see PRR and I felt my anticipation raising higher and higher, I knew it was worth the long day. I sang along to every song, I danced, I shouted a request for Golden Disco, the band were on top form and looked happy, it was pretty damn amazing. You know you’ve had a good time when you wake up the following morning feeling like you’ve been hit by a bus, and your throat is red raw! I only got to speak to Jamie from the band after the gig, but he was really lovely. He’d remembered me from other shows, and asked me if I was going to the London show (I couldn’t unfortunately, and it’s now something I bitterly regret. If only I had more money!) and gave me a hug, so I was riding pretty high on that after the show.

But really, almost 2 weeks later, has it really sunk in, that it’s the end for Pure Reason Revolution. Which is a real shame, because their latest album was the most polished I had heard them, and I feel bad that this band never, ever got the attention that they really deserved, which leaves a bitter taste in my mouth knowing that was one of the primary reasons they split, with all of the band members on good terms with one another. Maybe it’s selfish of me to say, but I almost feel hard done by that I’m losing my favourite band because they just couldn’t get the break they were looking for, despite having one of the most solid, loyal fanbases I’ve witnessed.

So naturally, since the gig I’ve been playing all 3 albums on repeat, and I hope that one day they may decide to give it another crack and reform. Just remember guys, those electricity bills aren’t going to pay themselves.

140. my visions of a dream was open wide.

Oh hello. I thought I would give an update on my week.

On Monday, I met up with Emma after work, as a) I hadn’t seen her in ages and b) we wanted to do something to post-celebrate my birthday. Because I don’t finish work till 8 and I usually miss dinner as a result, I suggested going for a meal and then a drink or too, so we went to Wagamamas. I’d been craving ramen for a while and Emma had never been so it was a win-win situation. Plus! They do gyoza and coconut ice cream that is so amazing that it pales all others in comparison. D: Whilst we were waiting for the food to arrive, Emma gave me my presents! :D She bought me some beautiful earrings (as seen to the left.. except you can see more of the box/posts rather than the actual earrings but you get the picture hopefully D:) and also some Harajuku Lovers ‘Baby’ perfume, which I tried when I got home that evening and it smells gorgeous. I’m looking forward to my usual perfume, “Absinthe” to run out so I can start using this one regularly, haha. We then wait to Henry’s for a Tokyo Iced Tea, and the gorgeous barman was there again. UGHHHH. He’s so beautiful it makes my heart sing. We didn’t get served by him, but that’s probably for the best. Emma and I have concluded that theres probably a point in life where if I did get served by him again, ordering a drink wouldn’t be enough. I would simply have to touch his face.

In my last entry, I mentioned that my tickets for Pure Reason Revolution hadn’t arrived yet. They did finally arrive, 4 days before the gig. Considered I ordered them over 2 weeks before they arrived, I think that’s a pretty terrible service. I’m going to avoid TicketWeb in future, I think. So, although my tickets arrived.. I didn’t get to go anyway! I’ve pinched a nerve just under my shoulder blade, and at that point nothing I took could help with the pain. As it happens, I’m glad I didn’t go, because they started their set late, and I would have missed over half of it to get the train back. :/ My back is slowly getting better now, or at least more comfortable after finding the winning combination of pain killers, but I know it takes a while to recover.

At work on friday, I had to close up the pharmacy, and before I can leave, I have to get the duty manager to sign for the controlled drugs safe key, and to set the alarm for the counter. Usually I get them to come to me by calling them on their line, but every time I’ve tried of late, it’s been engaged and I haven’t been able to find them. This happened to me on Monday as well, but luckily I was able to find the duty manager on the shop floor, but it still made me late to meet Emma. I wasn’t so lucky on Friday, and despite asking several people what to do, they just kept sending me back to wait, and to keep on calling. It was only 45 minutes after I was due to leave, somebody told me the duty manager’s line has been down since Monday(!) and that’s why I’m not able to get through. After getting a message through on the tannoy, it was almost an hour later before I left, and I think that’s really unfair on me, that I was just fobbed off leaving me to stand there, well after my shift had finished. I’m going to talk to my boss about this next week and see if I can get paid for this hour, because it’s just not right. 10 or 15 minutes is fine… but an hour. :/

There probably will be no updates next week as I am working every day but Sunday. D: But I have 5 days off after that, happy days! So expect lots of spam then.

139. bird flying high; you know how i feel.

Tuesday, June 1st, 2010

On Wednesday (26th), it was my 21st birthday. And above is the most delicious cupcake in the world.

I actually spent most of my birthday this year working overtime (and I am doing so again tomorrow D: But hey, money is money…), so I opened my cards and presents at just before midnight. From my brother, I got one of those 21 keys and a bottle of Pepsi max. I’m not kidding. I’ve still yet to figure this one out. D: But from my parents, because my 21st is my last significant birthday for 9 years, I wanted something that I could keep for a long time, they bought me an amethyst tear-drop necklace (though the chain looks a little weak so I’m going to buy a stronger chain for it, through fear of losing it) and matching amethyst ring, along with another ring like the amethyst one, except with a topaz stone. They are lovely, and I hope they last me a long time, so I have something to look back on.

Work was fine, I was working with my favourite locum pharmacist that day. It dragged a little during the morning, so one of my co-workers, Pauline, took me by car on a little trip to collect some prescriptions from a further away surgery, a) to show me where the surgery was for future reference, and b) give me a little change of scenery. Before I went for my dinner break, one of the other ladies I work with on Saturdays, Linda, came in on her day off to bring me a birthday card, which I thought was sweet. After my dinner break things picked up a bit, and my shift was due to end, so I was putting my stuff together when Pauline and the locum revealed a big pink back that somehow I’d managed not to notice for the entire 8 hours, filled with a few gifts and a card for me! I was completely floored. I’d only been working there for a month, so I was just expecting a happy birthday, a card at the most. I thought it was so incredibly sweet that they’d do that for me, I got a little bit emotional haha, but I kept my cool in front of them, so all is good. They bought me a tatty teddy (the grey teddy with the blue nose.. usually associated with Clintons) ‘21′ birthday mug, and a beautiful jewellery hanger. It matched the jewellery I got for my birthday quite well actually. XD. I gave them a kiss and a hug to say thank you, then away I went to celebrate my birthday~!

Because I finished at 6 that night, and wanted to get showered and dressed up for my birthday, my dad had made reservations to go to Threeways (the Lebanese restaurant) at 8:45, leaving me plenty of time to gush about how nice my co-workers were, and to get my birthday get up on. I had originally had my eye on a gorgeous embellished khaki dress to wear for my birthday, but by the time I’d been paid, they had sold out of it. D: So I settled on this leopard print dress (left, you can also see the necklace I got for my birthday) instead, which actually looked really nice on me in the finish. It’s ironic really, I used to say that I’d never wear leopard print as it looks cheap and tacky. Now about 1/8th of my wardrobe is probably leopard print, haha!

So away we trot to the restaurant, we had a starter of humous (you’ll struggle to find any that’s better, I swear) and Lebanese bread, and then I had a dish called ‘Shish Tawouk’ which was really nice, but didn’t have the same impact as the first dish I had there. I think that’s because the first time I was overcome by the joy of Lebanese food, so this time it was just really really good food, as opposed to amazing. We finished the meal with a portion of baklawa. As we were leaving, the woman who owns the restaurant told me that when my dad reserved the booking he mentioned it was my 21st, so she gave us a free portion of baklava to take home with us too! I ended up taking some of these to work with me for my co-workers to try, seeing as they were nice enough to buy me presents. The rest I ate for lunch the following day. :P

Our next stop was to Henrys. I had originally wanted to go for a few cocktails, but I was so full after my meal, I decided to just have a simple drink… Champagne! But it’s okay, it’s a girls 21st, so it’s totally justified. Henrys, was basically dead. Nobody ever goes out on a Wednesday so we were the only people in there haha. But oh my God, the bartender was one of the cutest I’d ever seen. DDDD: So pretty! My dad also mentioned to him that it was my birthday… and I got my drink free! Haha. Being 21 has it’s perks ;D After my glass of champagne, I went home to eat my birthday cupcake and play some birthday Left 4 Dead 2. All in all, I had a good day!

In other news, how utterly crap were we in Eurofail Song Contest? In my humble opinion, Germany wasn’t much better. D: She was like a German Lilly Allen and came across as SO fake. And even though I was rooting for my motherland in my heart, I wanted Turkey to win, despite the fact they’re called Manga.

I’m supposed to be seeing Pure Reason Revolution next Thursday. They’re holding a one-off gig in London to preview some of their new album material. I ordered my tickets a week ago and they still haven’t arrived. D: I’m not too impressed. If they’re not here by Friday, I’m going to call up ticketweb and track them down. D: Has anyone had any issues with them before?
